A crocheted rug made from old things with a pattern is ideal for beginner needlewomen! Crocheted rugs from old things: how to make

Over the years of life, every person’s home accumulates a huge number of items of clothing, tablecloths, curtains, bedspreads and other things that are a pity to throw away and impossible to use for their intended purpose. Therefore, it is quite natural that many women wonder what useful things can be done from seemingly unnecessary clothes. But it turns out there is a way out - these are rugs made from old things that can be laid in the bathroom, in the hallway, and if it turns out to be large and beautiful, which is quite possible, then in the living room. At the same time, you should not be afraid to use your imagination when creating this new product and experiment with the use of different tools for work, textures and colors of fabrics.

A rug made from old things based on: preparing tools and materials

Perhaps you can start the “fight” with unnecessary things by creating a rug, the basis of which will be burlap or a rubber bath mat. Calling this method weaving is not entirely correct, but it is an excellent option for recycling old clothes if you do not yet own a crochet hook or knitting needles. So, in addition to the actual unnecessary things, you will need scissors, a rubber bath mat with holes or burlap, the size of which will correspond to the size of the future finished product, as well as tweezers.

Having collected all the materials and tools, you can begin to create blanks, without which it will be impossible to create rugs from old things. To do this, you should cut each item of clothing into strips 1.5-2 cm wide and 6-10 cm long. It is worth noting that in order to obtain strips of the same length, before you start weaving rugs from old things, you can create a certain tool for more convenient work. To do this, take a smooth round piece of wood with a diameter of 6-7 cm and make a vertical depression in it on one side. In this case, the process of creating blanks will proceed as follows: a strip of fabric should be wound in a spiral around the resulting new “tool” and, inserting scissors into the recess, cut it. This way you can very quickly get the same strips needed for further work.

Creating a rug based on: photo of the finished work

Having a sufficient number of strips from old clothes on hand, you can proceed directly to creating a rug. If you use a rubber mat with wide holes as a base, then a strip of fabric should be threaded into adjacent holes and tied in a knot, preventing it from slipping out. These actions should be performed until there is not a single free centimeter left. If you are using a rug with small holes, you do not need to tie the strips.

The process of making a rug looks a little more complicated if you use burlap as a base. The fact is that there are no ready-made holes in this fabric; they must be made using tweezers, lifting parallel threads and inserting a strip of fabric under them. However, the main goal remains the same - to fill the entire base area with blanks from old clothes. The result is very original rugs made from old things. You can see a photo of one of them below.

Knitted rugs from old things: preparing the “yarn”

Waste clothing can also be an excellent material for making “yarn”, from which you can knit a rug of any size. It is best to knit rugs from old items using “threads” made from knitted T-shirts or blouses, but other options are also acceptable. The fabric must be cut into strips about 1 cm wide and carefully sewn together. Please note that it is better not to make knots, otherwise knitting rugs from old things will be more difficult, and the finished product will be less neat. In order to have a minimum number of connections, things should be cut in a spiral, from bottom to top. In this case, less time will be needed to prepare the “yarn,” and the created rug will look neater.

Knitting a rug from old things

For knitting you will need needles No. 9 or No. 10, but it all depends on the thickness and texture of the clothing you are using. You may need thinner or thicker knitting needles. If you have worked at least a little with these tools, then knitting a rug from old things will not be at all difficult for you. You should pick up loops as usual - their number should correspond to the width of the future rug. Next, you should knit a few rows with an elastic band, and then switch to stocking stitch or any other pattern known to you. You should also finish knitting with an elastic band. The end of the yarn can be hidden by threading it through several loops on the wrong side.

DIY rug made from braids

There is another way to create a rug from old things, which does not require skills in working with any special tools, with the exception of a needle, but learning to work with it is not at all difficult, and most women already know how to do it.

So, to begin with, as in many other cases, you need to cut old clothes into strips. Then, connecting them at the top with a pin of 3 pieces, braid the braids, which are also secured at the end, preventing unraveling. When there are a sufficient number of such blanks, they will need to be sewn together with side parts. At the final stage, the rug should be covered with bright braid or the same strip of clothing.

Crochet rugs from old things: preparatory stage

A crocheted rug made from old things can become a bright and homely, warm decoration for a hallway or bathroom. The master class on this type of needlework given below will make this task much easier for you. First you need to cut old things into strips and roll them into balls with the front side. At the same time, there should be a different ball for each color, thanks to this it will be possible to knit the rug with even multi-colored stripes, and not just any other way. It is also advisable not to combine fabrics of different textures, otherwise a crocheted woven rug made from old things may not turn out smooth, and after washing it may stretch or shrink unevenly.

Crocheting a rectangular rug: master class

A set of a number of air loops, the number of which corresponds to the width of the future product - this is the action with which each crocheted rug made from old things begins. The master class is aimed at preventing possible mistakes in your work. So, the rug should be knitted in single crochet stitches. In this case, every 4-5 rows it is necessary to check the number of loops - it must correspond to the original one. Otherwise, you will weave a rug that will either narrow or expand, and this will negatively affect its appearance.

When knitting, when changing from one color to another, the ends of the strips should be carefully sewn together using a thread and a needle. A rug can have as many rows as necessary to cover a particular room with it. There is another way to make a seemingly ready-made crocheted rug more expressive. You can cut strips from old things with your own hands and tie them around the perimeter of the product. It is important that the blanks are bright in color.

Crocheting a round rug

You can also crochet a round rug from strips of old clothes. The “yarn” should be prepared in the same way as for a rectangular rug. You will also need a large diameter hook. This tool should be selected in accordance with the thickness of the strips, in which case the finished product will not curl.

To crochet a rug from old things, you should start from a set of chain stitches. Next, you need to connect the first and last loops of this row, then make a rise by threading the thread through the center of the circle, grab it with a hook along with the adjacent loop and pull it out through the center. When the circle is knitted, you need to make another loop and continue knitting the outer side in the circle, each time grabbing the adjacent loop and finishing one or more. On each row it is necessary to add such a number of loops that would prevent the rug from curling. These steps must be continued until you get a mat of the desired diameter.

A mat made from old T-shirts for a hula hoop: necessary materials and tools

Anyone who has a large knitted T-shirt, scissors, many different colorful things, preferably from fabric of the same texture, and the hula hoop itself can weave rugs from old things on a hula hoop. Its diameter should correspond to the size of the rug that you want to obtain as a result.

First you will need to prepare the materials. To do this, the T-shirt should be cut into strips 1.5-2 cm wide. The cut piece of fabric should have the shape of a closed circle. You will need 10 such strips. In addition, you need to prepare several large balls of strips of approximately the same width and different colors. It is advisable to connect the pieces together by sewing them together using a needle and thread, this way the rug will look neater. It is worth noting that if instead of a large hula hoop you take a small hoop as a basis, you can get an original napkin for the table or a background for some craft that needs to be hung on the wall.

The process of creating a hula hoop mat

You should start creating the rug by putting 10 strips of T-shirt on the hoop. Each of them should connect opposite sides of the hula hoop and pass through the center. The resulting product will vaguely resemble a bicycle wheel with spokes.

When all the stripes from the T-shirt are located in their places, you can move on to the next stage, namely filling the remaining space with strips cut from unnecessary bright clothes. To do this, secure the end of the fabric thread at the intersection of all the “knitting needles” and weave it between them. This should be done until the entire space is filled. It is worth keeping in mind that hula hoop mats made from old things will turn out to be more original if you come up with a certain way of alternating stripes of different colors.

Everyone knows what women usually complain about - they have a meager wardrobe and an insufficient closet. And if the first problem can be solved only after the next salary, then recycling old things is as easy as shelling pears. If you have a couple of unnecessary items of clothing lying around, you can always use them to make an unusual and homely rug. No special skills required. Rugs made from old things will make your home cleaner and more comfortable at the same time.

Putting things in order

So, first, audit your closet. Otherwise, how can you weave a rug from old things? Collect everything that is small or large for you in a separate bag. Understand that those jeans are of no use if they've been sitting on the shelf for two years because you can't fit into them. And know that by throwing away old things, you are not throwing away the hope of returning to a good figure, but simply finally come to the conclusion that you are worthy of new things. Remove everything that is outdated from the closet; everything that has at least one hole in it; everything you haven't worn in three months. After this, you will feel how even breathing has become easier. In addition, this is a worthy reason to update your wardrobe with beautiful outfits.

We sort things out and prepare threads

So, the things collected in the package need to be disassembled. If they contain anything else useful - buttons, zippers, appliqués - this should be removed and placed in a separate box. Now you can start knitting rugs from old things. First prepare the threads. Of course, the longer the continuous thread, the more comfortable your knitting will be. So, cut the clothes into strips no more than 1-1.5 cm thick. It is better to knit in the round, without breaking the thread if possible. These rugs can combine any materials. So it doesn’t even matter whether you cut jeans or knitted T-shirts. It is worth considering the colors of the material - they will primarily affect the appearance of your finished product. Involve your husband and children in this pleasant activity - let them also contribute.

Choosing a hook

In addition to large balls of thread, you will need a large hook. No, you can knit a rug from old things using knitting needles, but it’s more convenient and faster to do it with crochet. It must be very large and wooden. Choose a hook with a long and strong handle to avoid accidental breakage. If you do not understand the sizes, the sales consultant will be happy to help you with your choice. The fold of the hook should be large enough to catch wide strips of fabric.

Let's start knitting

If you are familiar with this type of knitting, double crochet, then you can get down to business right away. Rugs made from old items are knitted using the usual patterns. To get a regular round rug, you need to cast on three air loops and close them in a circle. The second row is knitted simply - 2 in each loop of the first row. In the third row, 2 stitches are knitted through the first loop of the bottom row, in the next - one, then two again. The distance between double columns increases in proportion to the number of the row. For example, in the next row, 2 stitches in one loop are knitted through 2 “single” stitches. And so on. This is a simple circle diagram.

Such different rugs

Rugs made from old things come in any shape - round, square, elongated. Having learned to knit well, you can make a butterfly, leaf or other shape from fabric threads. Now you know there is an easy way to recycle old items and fill your home with handmade items.

This rug can be made from unnecessary things

Exclusive items make the design unique. Handicrafts are a great way to create original crafts with your own hands with minimal investment. Thanks to original and interesting things, your home becomes more comfortable. Many people are fond of handicrafts for the home and sew rugs from the most unusual materials with their own hands.

Our grandmothers also knew how to knit a bright, warm and cheerful rug not only from yarn, but also from those things that we usually throw away. We offer several interesting handicraft lessons in which beginners will learn how to make exclusive rugs with their own hands.

There will probably be things in the house that have already served their owners “faithfully and truly.” Try to look at them in a new, creative way, using them in the most unexpected way.

Knitted and woven rugs

Such needlework is called utilitarian, when beautiful designer crafts are created from old things. A stylish home rug can be knitted or woven from leftover yarn, T-shirts, old sweaters and other used items. We offer several simple lessons for beginning needlewomen.

How to make rugs from old clothes

Rug "clearing"

A rug in the shape of a beautiful green meadow will decorate a child's room, bedroom and even living room.

Desk mat in the shape of a green lawn

The work will require several skeins of yarn. To make the grass look realistic, use several shades of green. In order for the rug to serve for a long time, wear out less and not slip on a smooth floor surface, it is better to buy wool blend yarn. We will knit with crochet number 14.

The rug is decorated with various figures

Let's get started:

  1. We take five skeins of yarn, separate the thread from each and combine everything into one bundle. The result was a thick working thread of five separate threads.
  2. We knit a chain with a thick working thread, casting twenty chain loops.
  3. To secure the loops, we make single crochets. To get fluffy pile, they need to be pulled out.
  4. Similarly, we knit rows that fold into a square or rectangular fabric. We will knit each new row from the loops of the previous one, that is, without additions or openwork omissions.
  5. When the canvas is ready, we carefully cut the retracted loops with scissors and fluff our “clearing” with our hands.

If you are making a rug for a nursery, the clearing can be further decorated. Crochet bright flowers and attach them to the grass.

A rug made from old things

Do not rush to throw away old sweaters or any other items from your wardrobe. Pay attention to the texture of the fabric; if it is soft enough and pleasant to the touch, you will get a wonderful, cozy rug. From the scraps you can weave a carpet of any shape and size. The color scheme depends entirely on the imagination of the needlewoman.

Rainbow rug for home
  • First you need to pick up a few knitted or knitted items that you don’t mind cutting into shreds. From each item we cut strips of the same length, the width of each strip is 5 cm.
  • To make it more convenient to work, you can apply the template to paper.
  • Let's start weaving. First, we lay the strips horizontally, securing each element at the ends with pins. On top, in a checkerboard pattern, we lay one strip at a time. The algorithm is as follows: the strip is threaded above the horizontal one, and then “dives” under the bottom. So we continue to weave all the blanks one by one.
  • When all the elements are braided, we sheathe the carpet outline to make the product more durable.

The original and practical rug is ready. The color scheme can be anything from contrasting black and white to rainbow cheerful shades.

Rug made of pompoms

Every housewife and needlewoman will have leftovers of multi-colored threads. You shouldn’t throw them away, because you can make wonderful crafts from the simplest and, at first glance, unnecessary raw materials. The soft mat is easy to make, and you can spin pompoms in the evening with the whole family.

Very unusual rug made of pompoms

Let's get started:

  • We'll collect everything you need. You will need a sheet of thick cardboard, leftover yarn and scissors.
  • On a sheet of cardboard we draw a template for making buboes. You can circle the glass, and make a smaller one inside the large circle, so you get the shape of a donut. Cut out two of these templates.
  • We connect two cardboard blanks together and wrap threads on top. The more layers you wrap, the more magnificent the pompom will be.
  • When the threads are wound in 5-6 layers, cut on the sides, pull the template up a little, and tie it in the middle with a thread. We remove the cardboard blanks and straighten the bubo until fluffy. We make a lot of these preparations.
  • For the base of the rug, we take fabric, fold it in half and stuff it like a pillow with soft filling. We sew pompoms close to each other on top. The soft, fluffy and bright rug is ready.

Pompom rugs

It's no secret that now many people have a huge amount of old things. There is absolutely no need to throw them away, because you can make extremely attractive rugs. They will decorate any interior. You can make an interesting color scheme that will be decorated with interesting elements.

How to prepare a buckle?

As you can imagine, initially you will need a buckle. It is better to give preference to knitwear. These are, for example, T-shirts, sweaters. It is advisable to choose the brightest things. Place them on a flat surface.

Use scissors to remove the finishing seam from the bottom.

Now you need to cut strips 2-3 cm wide. Do not cut until the end is about 3 cm. So work until the armhole line.

Now place the resulting product on your hand. Now cut all the untouched elements diagonally. You will have one solid ribbon.

This cutting method is considered almost universal. This way you can even work with children's tights. If the fabric is very dense, then you can make narrower cuts. For example, 1.5 cm.

The part that you have left can be cut into a spiral. This way you can work with even the smallest scraps. When you're done with one item, simply roll it up into a ball and move on to the next. The more colors the better.

Crochet

This work is considered relatively simple. Even an inexperienced needlewoman can handle it. It is much more difficult to decide where you will hang this product.

Now cast on the required number of stitches. This will be the size of the width of your future product. Knit in a stitch without a cape. Initially, you should try to make a rectangular version, and then a round one. Here you need to connect five air loops in a circle. Constantly add loops.

The rug will turn out extremely cute. It is advisable to alternate colors. For example, 2-3 rows with one, and then another, and again there is a return to the original.

Weaving

If you want to weave a rug, you will need a special frame. You can do everything yourself by placing the carnations at a distance of 2.5 cm. See how everything is located in the photo below.

The threads should be tightened step by step. A neutral color is also suitable for the base. However, if you knit too loosely, it will stand out too much.

Now take the working thread. Pass it alternately over and under the warp thread.

If you decide to change the color of the working thread, then you just need to cut it and tie a new one. You can leave special soft tails to create a fringed rug. All rows should be periodically pulled closer to the first. After finishing knitting, simply remove all knotted seams. There are a huge number of ways to knit from old things. But this one was chosen because of its relative simplicity. Even a child can handle the job.

That's it, your mat is now ready. Admire how beautiful he is.

1. A masterpiece made of knitted ribbons

Who said that ribbons need to be tied to the base only randomly. By the way, see the technique of execution in the article Cozy rug with your own hands. Beautiful stories, compositions and patterns look gorgeous on rugs made from old T-shirts. And how to learn how to do this, see the article.

2. Designer item made from leftover ribbons and cords

This beautiful little thing is made on a cardboard circle, similar to the hula hoop technique. If you make a sufficiently large number of slits on a cardboard circle, the work will be more dense. There are 60 slots here. And also used a cord paracord, to increase wear resistance. After all, they will not only look at the rug, they will walk on it. A ribbon with pompoms is undoubtedly pleasing to the eye, however, small and soft forms should be used so as not to interfere with walking.

Inspired by this handmade masterpiece, I made.
