What category do Mary Kay products fall into? Mary Kay cosmetics: reviews from users and specialists. Mary Kay cosmetics - weaknesses

The work of a makeup artist is related to the art of makeup and creating images, and it is no secret that many famous artists work on show programs, where there are up to 50 models per evening. Each model has to create her own bright style, which would remain impeccable throughout the evening and would not require additional adjustments, and it is simply impossible to do without high-quality cosmetics.

Mary Kay cosmetics meet all the high requirements that makeup artists place on high-quality cosmetics. The stroke, after applying with a brush with an applicator, turns out to be perfectly transparent, not requiring additional shading, the color is always pure. Makeup for the catwalk is especially bright, and the consumption of decorative cosmetics is quite large, so the cost of Mary Kay cosmetics is pleasantly pleasing with its optimality.

The uniqueness of Mary Kay products lies in its technologies, which were used in the production of cosmetics long before the advent of nanotechnology. By dissolving the coloring pigment down to the molecule in a unique water-based solvent, which is a proprietary invention of the Mary Kay company, a solution is obtained, which is then sprayed into a vacuum chamber, where the water instantly evaporates, and the molecules form particles of absolutely identical round shape.
Unlike technologies from other companies, where coloring substances are obtained by grinding and have an uneven fragmented shape that can injure the skin, Mary Kay decorative cosmetics are easily removed without leaving a mark and do not injure the skin of the face.

A few more facts.
Since 1949, the United States has had a law prohibiting the use of hormones in the production of cosmetics; since 1976, such a law was adopted in Europe, and since 1998 in Russia. Therefore, the claims that the effect that cosmetics have in the fight against early skin aging and the elimination of already existing wrinkles are associated with the use of hormonal agents are unfounded. Even Mary Kay's anti-aging cosmetics use only active plant substances that stimulate the subcutaneous layer to accelerate skin cell renewal.

Product quality control in Europe and the USA is carried out at the stage of retail sales, and in Russia, this process is carried out at the stage of issuing a certificate, which does not guarantee the authenticity of the cosmetic product and compliance with the certificate.
Carrying out an expert trip to Russia several years ago, representatives of leading companies such as Lancome, Christian Dior, Estée Lauder were very surprised when they came across cosmetics for sale that had never been produced by their companies.
Often, unscrupulous sellers display samples of original products and sell pseudo cosmetics made in China. Maybe that’s why there are dissatisfied statements about this or that cosmetics that cause irritation, maybe it’s worth thinking about where and from whom you should buy cosmetics.

Mary Kay cosmetics are not sold in retail chains; they are distributed through consultants or directly from Mary Kay. A Mary Kay consultant receives products from a warehouse, without intermediaries, uses these cosmetics herself, and conducts classes on the proper use of skin care cosmetics. Manufacturers of other companies "Mira-Lux", "Oriflame" have a much larger participation of intermediaries, for example, in the Russian Line up to 6 levels.

Mary Kay cosmetics belong to the luxury class, on a par with Lanc and Estée Lauder. Cosmetics such as L'Oreal belong to a lower class in terms of their requirements for safety and suitability for the intended purpose of the product.Extra luxury cosmetics differ only in the price per package, which can cost more than $400 for an empty perfume bottle.
Mary Kay cosmetics are professional, elite cosmetics with an affordable price for most girls and women, which guarantees quality and justifies the expected skin care results.

Mary Kay Cosmetics cares for the skin and protects it from the harmful effects of the environment; a huge selection of cosmetics provides the opportunity to care for any skin type, nourishing it with minerals and vitamins, slowing down the aging process and making a woman young, beautiful and attractive.

You can order any cosmetics from this list on the website through the contact form in the "Contacts" section or by phone, the numbers of which are indicated on all pages of the website.

Is it possible to call Mary Kay cosmetics sites and consultant sites online stores? In our opinion, this comparison is not correct. Consultants' websites are catalogs of Mary Kay cosmetics, where you can familiarize yourself with the company's products, ask any questions about cosmetics and get answers to them. In addition, you can ask the consultant to conduct a master class and try the product of interest for free during the master class.
Many girls already know about cosmetics, and they don’t want to waste time, so they are ready to buy Mary Kay cosmetics in an online store, or place an order online on a consultant’s website. For this reason, websites are created to help find the necessary information or the necessary product. But at their core, these are ordinary sites about cosmetics, and not online stores.

In 2011, Mary Kay was the sixth largest direct selling company in the world. Net revenue was US$2.9 billion.

A special feature of the company is that only women are hired as salespeople (“beauty consultants”). Men, however, are present among the staff and on the board of directors. The company's philosophy is designed to help women achieve career success while maintaining the ability to fully engage with their families. The company strives to optimally use the characteristics of female psychology in its activities: to advance in the company, you need to help others succeed, because consultants receive bonuses for the success of the newcomers they bring and train; various rewards for successful work are practiced, such as discounts, cosmetics and perfumes, handbags, branded suits, precious jewelry, trips, pink cars; The magazine “Applause” is published with photographs of consultants who have achieved success in the company.

The company's symbol is a bumblebee: it is believed that, according to the laws of physics, it cannot fly, but it needs to, so it flies.

Golden Rule: Treat people the way you would like to be treated.

Corporate color is pink.

The company's mission is to improve the lives of women around the world.

Mary Kay's head office is located in the American city of Addison, Texas, near Dallas. The company was founded by Mary Kay Ash in 1963. The chairman of the board of directors is her son Richard Rogers, and the president and CEO (since 2006) is David Holl.

Business model

Mary Kay was the first company to teach women how to take care of their skin - before that, cosmetic companies simply sold blush, lipstick or new shades of eye shadow. Sales are carried out through a network of sales consultants - “beauty consultants”. To become a consultant, you need to take a short free training course on sales and skin care programs (more in-depth training can be completed throughout your entire time working in the company), and also purchase a starter “beauty package”, which includes the company’s products. The initial beauty package is sold at a discount relative to the market value, which allows consultants to resell profitably, easily and quickly, thereby generating income and better understanding the specifics of the company. It is very important for a company to abstract itself from pyramid companies, the basis of which involves illegally receiving money from clients. Unlike pyramid companies, Mary Kay sells its products to absolutely all consultants at a single discount.

Training of consultants is extremely important and a priority for the company. Such seminars are often held in a format of no more than 6 people, at home. Delivery of goods, as well as payment for them, must be carried out strictly on site.

Mary Kay specifically limits the range of its products: this is done so that consultants have a good command of the existing range of products and easily remember new items. And also so that consultants, if desired, can maintain a mini-warehouse of products and ensure instant delivery of the ordered goods. Unlike many companies, Mary Kay does not limit sales.

A beauty consultant can hire other consultants in any number and from anywhere in the world. The company has no assigned territories. Mary Kay Ash writes in her autobiography: “I remembered that while I was earning $1,000 a month in commissions from sales in my division, my husband got a new job in St. Louis. I couldn't take the division with me, so I lost all the sales commissions from the people I'd spent eight years recruiting, training, and motivating. In my opinion, this is obvious injustice. I invested in developing my territory, but someone else inherited these great sales reps and the commissions on their sales.”

The company also has incentive programs, such as the famous pink Cadillac. Techniques are also used to encourage husbands to make them proud of their wives and encourage their careers. For example, at one of the seminars, each of the consultants' husbands received a "She's Just Fantastic!" badge, another time - a car bumper sticker "Ask me about my wife's career." The company sometimes receives grateful reviews from clients' husbands because their wives began to look better, and from consultants' husbands who got to know their children better when the wife started working and the husband began to take part in their upbringing, as well as from consultants' husbands who were able to change their unloved a job that was more productive for them due to the fact that their wives began to earn more and were able to provide for the family during the transition period.

Mary Kay, having carefully considered the issue of franchising, abandoned this idea. The refusal was due to the fact that many women would be forced to turn to men for financing, and this in turn would significantly reduce their independence and, ultimately, affect the company. Instead, the company went public with an IPO in 1967. This allowed us to significantly increase funding and expand our expansion into the market. The cosmetics company Mary Kay has become the first company on the New York Stock Exchange to be led by a woman. In addition, Richard was the youngest president of a company listed on the New York Stock Exchange.

Over the next decade and a half, sales grew steadily at an average annual rate of 28 percent. But between 1974 and 1978, sales stagnated and even slowed down slightly. To restore them, the company increased bonuses for its consultants. Sales began to rise again, averaging between 29% and 84% per annum over the next four years.

The company was offered to sell its products in shopping centers, but this did not suit them. Mary Kay specializes in personalizing the art of beauty, and in public places it is less convenient to conduct consultations, as women are embarrassed to remove makeup in public and do not want to spend time allotted for shopping on consultations.

In 1977, construction of a new 8-story headquarters in Dallas was completed. In 1993, the total area of all Mary Kay production facilities was equivalent to 3 football fields. The company also received a license from the FDA, which allowed it to develop and sell medicines such as sunscreens and other products.

The 1980s saw a sharp decline in economic growth, with women's employment now being based on full-time work. Between 1983 and 1985 the number of beauty consultants decreased by almost 2 times and amounted to about 100,000 people. Sales fell from $323 million to $260 million. The price of Mary Kay shares on the stock exchange has dropped significantly. Mary Kay and her son Richard decided to independently buy out all the remaining shares of the company for a total of $315 million. There was also a problem with IPS about paying taxes on time, but it was resolved in 1993 when Mary paid IPS $3 million. In 1989, Mary Kay attempted to take over its largest competitor, Avon, but the attempt was unsuccessful.

Mary Kay Cosmetics was named one of the 100 Best Workers in America in 1984 and 1993. In 1992, the company's retail turnover exceeded the $1 billion mark. The number of products distributed included over 200 items, and the number of beauty consultants increased to 250,000 people in 19 countries around the world. By 1993, the number of consultants exceeded 300,000, and the number of clients was more than 20,000,000. More than half of the nation's sales leaders earned over $1 million during their careers at Mary Kay, and the company's total bonus pool was $38 million annually. In 1993, the Mary Kay brand became the best-selling skin care and cosmetics brand in the United States, with wholesale sales growing by more than $735 million. In 1995, Mary Kay Ash resigned from her position as company manager due to health reasons.

The company celebrated its 35th anniversary in 1998 and in honor of this holiday, established a new prize for consultant leaders, a white GM sports SUV. That same year, Mary Kay was again recognized by Fortune magazine as one of the 100 Best Companies to Work For in America.

  • Data are given without taking into account inflation;
  • Official Methods of Mary Kay, Inc. includes rounding up of revenue and rounding down of number of consultants.

Factories

The main production factory is located in Dallas, Texas, USA. A second factory in Hangzhou, China, manufactures and packages products for the Chinese market. A third factory was opened in 1997 in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, for the European market. The Swiss factory was closed in 2003.

Cars

In 1968, Mary Kay Ash bought her first Elvis-themed pink Cadillac, repainted Mountain Laurel Blush by the dealer. This advertising stunt was so successful that Mary Kay in 1969 decided to reward five of her best salespeople with pink Cadillacs at the company's expense. Pink was an obvious choice, matching the company's eye and lip product range. Since 1980, this shade has been exclusively used by the Mary Kay fleet. Once every two years leader or national leader can take part in a competition for a new Cadillac. At the end of the two-year lease, the cars are repainted and sent back to auction. The shade of pink has changed over the years. In 1998 it changed to "pearl pink". In honor of the 35th anniversary, a white GMC Jimmy sports car was offered in the United States, a special edition for Mary Kay. As of 2007, top sellers can still earn themselves a coveted pink Cadillac.

In 2005, the company's fleet consisted of 9,870 vehicles produced by GM (USA).

In the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and Ukraine - pink Mercedes-Benz cars. In Argentina you can earn money for a pink Ford, and in Taiwan - a pink Toyota. In Australia there is a choice between the Ford Falcon and Volkswagen Beetle. In China there is a pink Volkswagen Santana. In the Nordic countries there is a pink Volvo V50.

Specific requirements for obtaining a vehicle depend on the country and the desired model. If the requirements are not met, then the driver must pay part of the car lease fee for that month. If the requirements are met, the driver pays 85% of the insurance and does not pay monthly leasing, or receives a pre-agreed amount of monetary compensation.

Since the introduction of this program, more than 100,000 sales consultants have already met the requirements to be able to use such a vehicle or receive monetary compensation. It is unknown how many leaders chose to receive money instead of a car, but GM estimates that the company made a total of about 100,000 pink Cadillacs for Mary Kay.

In 2012, the following brands of cars are available: Chevrolet Malibu, Chevrolet Equinox, Toyota Camry and Cadillac CTS, SRX & Escalade Hybrid, and to increase the motivation and productivity of sellers, a newcomer is introduced - the black Ford Mustang.

Sellers' earnings

As a private company, Mary Kay Inc. does not disclose all of its financial information to the public.

Consultants can earn money with Mary Kay in two ways:

  • Attracting new consultants;
  • Retail sales;

Earnings by attracting new consultants

Earnings from recruiting new consultants reflect commissions and bonuses on overall team sales. They do not include revenue from retail sales and revenue from Mary Kay's tools business.

  • 29,675 people were salespeople during the year;
  • 1,878 consultants earned more than C$100 in commissions;
  • 276 of the 553 top sellers earned more than C$17,471 in commissions;
  • 15 of the 23 national top sellers earned more than C$100,000 in commissions;
  • the standard commission was 50% of revenue.

Earnings from retail sales

There is no reliable data on this matter. The quoted figure of $1,250 per year (2010) for the average consultant was obtained by dividing Mary Kay Corporate's total annual revenue by the number of Mary Kay consultants. This figure is obviously incorrect as it does not take into account returns, discounted sales, auction sales, and consultant purchases for personal use - all of which would lower this figure.

Turnover among consultants

Employee turnover is estimated at 68.6% per year based on data submitted by Mary Kay (USA) to the FTC.

According to Mary Kay (Canada), staff turnover is estimated at 85% per year. This data excludes consultants who earn a commission but have been with the company for less than a year, as well as those who have been with the company for more than a year but do not receive a commission.

Lawsuits

Woolf v Mary Kay Cosmetics

In 2004, Woolf v. Mary Kay Cosmetics was initially decided in favor of the complainant, Claudine Wolf. This marked the first time that labor law standards were applied to independent consultants working from their own homes. This decision was overturned on appeal and finally overturned by the United States Supreme Court on May 31, 2005.

Ms. Wolfe was fired from her leadership position (director) because her division failed to generate sales for three consecutive months. Woolf insisted that the dismissal was illegal due to her medical condition - she was suffering from cancer.

Claims against liquidators

In May 2008, Mary Kay Inc. filed a lawsuit against the website Touch of the Pink Cosmetics, which sold products from former Mary Kay consultants at significantly reduced prices. According to the company, the website interfered with its business and illegally used the Mary Kay trademark.

July 20, 2009 Mary Kay Inc. filed a lawsuit against Pink Face Cosmetics for trademark infringement. This company sold Mary Kay products on eBay and other online resources at below average prices.

Product testing on animals

In 1989, the company announced a moratorium on animal testing under pressure from animal rights groups. She was one of the first in her industry to do this and signed the PETA appeal.

However, in 2012, Mary Kay Inc. has reintroduced animal testing as required by law in China for all health and beauty products.

Mary Kay in Russia

Mary Kay is a member of the Russian Direct Selling Association. It complies with the code of honor and conduct of members of the Association, which regulates honest treatment of the buyer and compliance with established standards for product sales.

Mary Kay Ash Charitable Foundation

This charitable foundation was founded in 1996 for two purposes:
Fighting women's cancer by supporting leading medical scientists searching for cures for breast, uterine, cervical and ovarian cancers;
Combat the epidemic of violence against women by providing grants to women's shelters and supporting community programs.

Mary Kay is one of the largest companies engaged in the production and distribution of decorative cosmetics, perfumes and complex beauty care products through direct sales. The Mary Kay brand is one of the most recognized brands in the world, and the company excels in the competition in the market and, according to recent data, ranks sixth in the list of well-known cosmetic manufacturers. The popularity of Mary Kay products among women is explained not only by their high quality and relevance, but also by the company's motto, which calls for improving the lives of women around the world. The history of the development of the Mary Kay brand is inextricably linked with its creator, Mary Kay Ash, a businesswoman who inspired thousands of women with her own example and personal strength to strive to realize their potential and create their own successful careers in Mary Kay.

Company founded by a woman

The idea of creating a new cosmetic brand belonged to Mary Kay Ash. The impetus for running her own business was a book that Ash wrote after encountering inequality at work. Ash intended to release a kind of instruction that was supposed to help women defend their rights and advance in business, but after detailed study and comprehension, the book turned into an effective business plan. In 1963, Mary Kay Ash founded a cosmetics company.

It is logical that a brand created by a woman is aimed specifically at the fairer sex. Their intuition, personal qualities and psychological characteristics help promote products and develop the company. Mary Kay's workforce is predominantly female, although men are still present among the full-time employees and in senior positions on the board of directors. The fundamental principle of the company is democracy. Starting from the very bottom, employees can move up the career ladder as much as they would like. The desire for career growth, dedication, intelligence and perseverance are the qualities that have helped many women achieve success at Mary Kay.

The symbol of Mary Kay is the bumblebee - an insect that, according to the laws of physics, cannot fly, but, without realizing it, continues to do the impossible.

Mary Kay's signature color is pink. The motto is to improve the lives of women around the world.

Mary Kay at the center of a scandal

In 1989, Mary Kay was one of the first cosmetics manufacturers to announce a moratorium on animal testing. In 2010, the company was blacklisted by PETA for resuming animal testing of its products. This step by Mary Kay management was made in order not to lose its position in the market of those countries where testing of cosmetics on animals is required by law.

Mary Kay cosmetics have not yet reached your city or do you need to go to a company representative quite far from your place of residence and work? This will no longer be a problem for you. Despite the fact that the most informative way is to purchase Mary Kay products during a personal meeting with a consultant, this method is not suitable for everyone.

The best solution in this case is to study the Mary Kay online catalog. It presents all the company's cosmetics, including the latest new products. Hundreds of thousands of women around the world prefer Mary Kay cosmetics due to the highest quality of products that meet the results of the latest developments in the field of science. The company operates on the principle of unconditional trust in all cosmetic lines with which it cooperates.
MaryKay allocates millions of dollars every year to carry out scientific developments, thanks to which we can confidently say that the products are of the highest level of quality, are completely safe and give high results that fully correspond to the expected. During testing, experts study each component in detail, both separately and in its interaction with other components of the cosmetic product. Testing is carried out in independent laboratories and strictly under the supervision of experienced dermatologists and ophthalmologists.
Mary Kay products are a true standard of quality. In the company's assortment you will find a wide range of face and body skin care products, as well as any variety of decorative cosmetics, which have long won the trust of girls all over the world. And to make you even calmer, the production of all cosmetic lines is carried out under strict government control. But everyone will agree that confirmation of the quality of cosmetics by experts and regulatory authorities is not the main thing. The most important thing is the trust of our regular customers and the increase in their number with each new company catalogue. And if a woman trusts us with her face and body, then this is worth a lot and sets us up for further, even better work. We always carefully read the reviews and wishes of our customers and thank them for making Mary Kay cosmetics more perfect.
