Cosmetology is developing at a fast pace, which is explained by the high demand for such procedures. Among hardware techniques, galvanization is popular. It is suitable for both women and men. To conduct a session, a special device is required that generates a constant electric current.

Galvanization has both indications and contraindications, so not everyone can do it. It should be borne in mind that the technique involves exposure to electric current. The procedure can also be performed at home. For this purpose, there are mobile devices that can be purchased in specialized stores.

What is galvanization?

Initially, galvanization was used as a method of physiotherapy. Later, experts noticed its positive effect on the skin of the face and suggested using the same devices to treat dermatological problems. This is how this technique came to cosmetology.

During the procedure, biologically active components penetrate the skin due to the assignment of an electrical charge to them. For this purpose, the action of direct current is used. Its power may vary depending on the condition of the body, the desired effect and existing problems.

Under the influence of current, not only substances enter the skin, but also stimulate their synthesis in the body itself. This releases endorphins, acetylcholine, heparin, histamine, prostaglandins and other active compounds. They act on skin vessels, expanding their lumen. Due to this, more blood flows to the tissues, which provides them with nutrition and accelerates gas exchange.

As a result of galvanization, the skin looks healthier and more rested. This is ensured by several effects:

Contraindications

Galvanization is not suitable for everyone, as it is carried out by exposure to electric current. Its use is contraindicated in the following conditions:

  • the presence of an oncological process;
  • period of bearing a child;
  • epilepsy, neurotic pathologies;
  • intolerance to the action of electric current on the skin;
  • pathologies of endocrine organs;
  • the presence of a pacemaker or other electrical prostheses in the body;
  • pathologies of the heart and vascular system;
  • the presence of an infectious process in the body, including acute respiratory viral infections, acute respiratory infections, influenza, herpes;
  • metal implants located at the site of current action;
  • the presence of reinforcing threads in the body;
  • pathological blood clotting;
  • some dermatological pathologies (molluscum contagiosum, vitiligo, dermatitis, eczema, rosacea);
  • fever of any origin;
  • damage to the skin in the area of ​​the device;
  • bronchial asthma.

If there are contraindications, the procedure should be postponed until they can be eliminated. Most of them are temporary, so after they disappear, galvanization can be carried out as usual.

Side effects

If the rules for working with the device are not followed or galvanization is carried out if there are contraindications to it, undesirable effects may occur. These include:

  • swelling of the face;
  • long-lasting redness of the skin in the affected area;
  • an increase in the amount of sebum released (due to a reduction in the duration of breaks between procedures);

Iontophoresis is a procedure performed using low voltage current. The procedure is carried out with a special device with attachments, through which an electric current is transmitted to the skin. This procedure increases blood circulation and improves the penetration ability of medicinal products.

As a result, beneficial substances from creams and masks penetrate deep into the dermis, where renewal and restoration processes occur.

Disincrustation is a procedure that cleanses the skin using galvanic current and an alkaline solution. When a galvanic current acts on a solution, saponification (a chemical reaction) occurs. The essence of the reaction is that alkalis, reacting with fatty acids of the sebaceous glands, are saponified and transformed into soap, with which the skin is cleansed.

The alkaline solution helps loosen the skin, resulting in sebum being removed from its pores. For example, for acne, disincrustation can be a good replacement for mechanical facial cleansing.

How is galvanotherapy performed?

Before the procedure, the skin is cleansed and degreased using several methods: brosage, scrub or light chemical peeling. Then a gauze cloth is applied to the cleansed skin, which has been previously impregnated with a special preparation or conductive substance, which contains medicinal ingredients. Next, the procedure itself is carried out: the cosmetologist slowly begins to treat the skin with a special electrode.

Typically two electrodes are used: active and passive. The specialist himself works as the active one, and the passive patient holds it in his hand. At the end of the procedure, the patient’s skin is wiped with a soothing lotion, a cooling mask is applied, and then a nourishing cream is applied.

The duration of the procedure is 30 minutes depending on the area being treated, and the galvanotherapy process itself lasts no more than 5 minutes. During the procedure, the patient feels a slight burning and tingling sensation, the intensity of the tingling depends on the individual threshold of tolerance.


The procedure is carried out in courses, no more than 2 times a month. The full course consists of 6 – 8 procedures. To consolidate the effect, the course is repeated after two or three months.

What is the essence of the procedure?

The device that carries out disincrustation is based on the electrophoresis method, which, using direct electric current, conducts biologically active substances through the skin and mucous membranes. In other words, electrophoresis is the process of moving dispersed phase particles. Dispersed particles are one or more phases (bodies) that do not mix and do not react with each other.

Thus, on the surface of the skin, the cathode (negatively charged electrode) begins to attract positive particles, which, under the influence of galvanic current, begin to activate, loosening the surface of the epidermis and producing the effect of alkalizing the skin.


As a result of their interaction, the acid-base balance of the skin decreases, and its environment transforms: from acidic it becomes alkaline. Next, the galvanophoresis solution begins to act. The solution contains: sodium chloride (5%), sodium bicarbonate (1%) or sodium salicylate (2%).

It happens that the solution is provided ready-made by the manufacturers of the galvanophoresis apparatus. The solution can be independently enriched with various active substances, for example, potassium, magnesium ions, etc.

After the transformation of the environment has occurred, an alkaline reaction and the process of saponification and alkalization of skin fats occur in the pores under the influence of alkali, that is, an increase in the pH of the skin. As a result, the pores are cleansed and the openings of the follicles are opened, and the contents of the secretion of the sebaceous glands are brought to the surface of the skin and removed mechanically.

In addition, during the process of changing the environment, acidic products, when passing through an electric current, destroy the connections between the cells of the stratum corneum (keratinocytes), which contributes to the thinning of the epidermis and the restoration of its epithelium.

In addition to facial cleansing, galvanic current conducts micro-massage of the skin, which improves blood and lymph circulation, skin permeability, and also accelerates metabolic processes in cells.

How to carry out the procedure

First of all, you need to remove your facial makeup. Then a special mask soaked in disinfectant is applied to the cleansed face. A mask is a pad of gauze, which, after being applied to the face, is treated with a negatively charged electrode. Particularly carefully treat areas where there are a large number of sebaceous glands.

The electrode can be wrapped in a napkin in the form of a roller - a sponge, which is moistened in disinfectant, or a mask can be applied as described above. The positive electrode is applied to the patient's forearm in the form of a cuff.

The final stage of the procedure consists of intensive restorative measures: applying drying, toning and nourishing masks.

The course of procedures consists of 5-10 sessions. Each procedure lasts 10 minutes with positive and negative polarity alternately.

The number of necessary procedures is determined by a cosmetologist. It depends on the problems that need to be solved. A second course of procedures is usually repeated after 2-3 weeks. This method is well combined with other cosmetic procedures.

Procedure protocol

Galvanization does not require special preparation, but a few days before the procedure, the patient must come for a preliminary consultation with a cosmetologist, during which the specialist will conduct an external examination of the skin in order to select the necessary drug and determine the presence or absence of contraindications to its implementation.

Stages of iontophoresis:

  • application of a pre-selected drug for the procedure;
  • treatment of the skin with galvanic current, which is supplied through labile (movable) or stationary electrodes (during the procedure with a stationary electrode, the doctor fixes it on top of a special fabric pad moistened with saline, which improves the conduction of current and protects the skin from damage);

The average duration of one iontophoresis session is 15-30 minutes.

The course consists of 5-8 procedures, which are carried out at intervals of once every 10-14 days. The effect becomes noticeable after 3-4 sessions, but over time it increases. The result lasts for 6-8 months, after which it is recommended to repeat the course.

Iontophoresis as a method of treating hyperhidrosis of the palms and feet

The mechanism of action of iontophoresis has not been reliably studied. There are two theories that explain the effect of electric current on the functioning of the sebaceous glands, according to the first of which, during the procedure, the sweat ducts are blocked, and if you believe the second, then the galvanic current blocks the production of sweat by disrupting the functioning of the sweat glands, but none of them found scientific confirmation in medicine.

During the procedure, the specialist asks the patient to lower the palms and feet, previously cleaned of contaminants and treated with a peeling composition, into baths filled with water, which are connected to a galvanic current device (the device generates a current of low strength and voltage, so the likelihood of receiving an electric shock during the procedure is minimal ). The role of the electrode in each bath is performed by a graphite plate, which lies at the bottom of the container.

The galvanization procedure lasts 30-50 minutes, and the patient feels only a slight tingling sensation. The course of treatment for hyperhidrosis consists of 5-10 sessions, which are carried out daily. To achieve a lasting effect, the specialist prescribes maintenance iontophoresis procedures to the patient, which must be completed once every two to three weeks. If signs of re-development of excessive sweating appear, the course is repeated.

Treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis in the axillary area using iontophoresis is difficult due to the lack of necessary electrodes.

  • pregnancy.

This procedure is contraindicated for pregnant women due to hormonal changes in the body during this period and an increased risk of negative effects of current on the health of the unborn child.

Main stages

At the preparatory stage, consultation with a specialist is necessary, which consists of examining the condition of the skin, identifying damage and diseases (if any).

  1. the skin is washed with a regular hygiene product (milk or gel);
  2. a special alkaline solution is applied to the skin;
  3. the specialist checks the device and configures it: adjusts the polarity and intensity of the current (at 0);
  4. galvanic current is turned on;
  5. the cosmetologist begins to move the electrode over the skin in the chin area, warning the patient about the possible appearance of a tingling sensation, warmth and a metallic taste in the mouth;
  6. the intensity of the current is gradually increased and the impact of the electrode on the chin is continued;
  7. with smooth movements they begin to carefully treat the entire face, moving the electrode strictly along the massage lines;
  8. special attention is paid to the upper lip, chin and nasolabial folds;
  9. when cleaning the neck, the effect of current on the thyroid gland area is eliminated;
  10. after about twenty minutes, soap forms on the face, which is easily washed off;
  11. the polarity of the electrode changes to positive;
  12. facial skin is re-treated to restore acidity;
  13. the current intensity is gradually reduced to zero;
  14. All product residues are removed from the skin;
  15. a special restorative mask and moisturizer are applied;
  16. the procedure does not require the use of local anesthesia, as it does not cause any pain.

The duration of the iontophoresis procedure is from 15 minutes to half an hour, disincrustation – up to 10 minutes, depending on the condition of the skin and the presence of pathologies.

Postoperative period

To quickly restore facial skin after galvanic cleansing, cosmetologists recommend:

  • do not use cosmetics for 24 hours after the procedure;
  • for a week, protect the skin from exposure to sunlight and any chemical and mechanical influences;
  • for 2 weeks do not visit the sauna, swimming pool, beach, and also do not use too aggressive cleansers;
  • To quickly restore your skin, you should regularly use restorative clay masks;
  • use an intensive moisturizer daily.

For greater effectiveness, experts recommend galvanizing the face in a course of 5 sessions with an interval of 3 weeks. After completing the full course, to maintain the skin in excellent condition, you must repeat the procedure once a month.

Possible complications

In some cases, cosmetic galvanotherapy may be accompanied by unpleasant phenomena:

  • excessive dry skin, accompanied by itching and flaking;
  • prolonged feeling of a metallic taste in the mouth;

  • skin redness for too long;
  • dermatitis;
  • excessive secretion of sebum.

Iontophoresis is a skin healing procedure using galvanic current. in combination with cosmetic preparations. Cosmetics undergo a polarization process, are charged and injected into the skin in the form of an electrolyte solution. Passing through the healing solution, the galvanic current causes the active movement of nutrient ions, which, accumulating in cellular tissues, enter the lymphatic and blood vessels.

Due to the property of galvanic current to increase tissue permeability, iontophoresis makes it possible to introduce nutrients into the deeper layers of the epidermis. In addition, the injected substances are most active and effective under the influence of current. The special value of the iontophoresis procedure is that it increases the skin’s ability to retain moisture in its cells, the lack of which is the main cause of wrinkles.

The possibilities of iontophoresis in rejuvenating and healing the skin are very extensive. The goals of iontophoresis are:

Solutions of sodium bicarbonate (1 - 3%), sodium chloride (3 - 5%), and sodium carbonate (5%) are most often used as alkali.
